The tattoo window is local to you. It is verified with your phone’s lock screen, and a lock screen reads local time. The upload deadline is a single moment, because a server enforces it.

What counts as an eligible tattoo

Only tattoos both started and finished between November 13, 2026 and December 4, 2026 are eligible. A piece begun before the window opens does not qualify, however much work went into it during the window.

What you must submit

Before you start

A 10–15 second video showing:

  • Your client, including their face
  • The area being tattooed
  • A phone lock screen with date and time clearly visible
  • You stating your first and last name, and that you are entering “the Ultimate Ink Challenge!”

When you finish

A second 10–15 second video showing:

  • Your client again, including their face
  • The finished tattoo, briefly
  • A phone lock screen with date and time clearly visible (completion date verification)
  • You stating your first and last name, and that you are ready to win “the Ultimate Ink Challenge!”

The work itself

  • At least one 15–30 second video showing the tattoo from all angles, highlighting the impressive details
  • Several photos showing the judges your artwork from different angles and distances
  • Make sure your lighting and camera quality is exceptional

Editing

The use of Photoshop or editing tools is strictly prohibited and may disqualify your entry.

Your entry link

Everything you upload goes through one private link, emailed to you. Register and it arrives the day entries open; if you’d rather not wait for an email, you can request it any time from the enter page. Either way it is personal to you, so don’t pass it around.

That link is where the work happens. You upload your check-in videos, your finished-piece video and your photos, choose the categories each tattoo belongs in, and submit. You can go back and change anything — swap a photo, add a category, add another tattoo — right up until the upload deadline. Nothing is final until that moment passes.

This is the practical reason to register early rather than on the last day: the link, the dates and the filming requirements reach you before you pick up a machine, instead of after you’ve finished a piece that can no longer qualify.

How many entries

As many as you can finish. There is no limit on entries overall and no limit per category — if you complete six tattoos in the window that belong in Best Traditional, all six can go in. Each one is judged on its own merits, and each one needs its own check-in and finished-piece videos.

A single tattoo can also be entered in more than one category when it genuinely fits both. You upload it once.

Judging

Some of the most talented and credible names in the game, judging what they know best. Every entry is scored without a name attached, so the work is all they see.

The panel scores every entry across the 9 judged categories, in two rounds. In round one every judge marks each entry advance or pass, and the top five in a category go through, with ties at the cut all going through. Round two scores what got through.

Judges score four things from 1 to 10, weighted equally: technique, composition, creativity and difficulty. An entry’s score is the average across the judges who scored it, and the highest average in a category wins it. If two entries finish level, the higher technique average takes it, then creativity. Best of Contest goes to the highest scoring female artist and the highest scoring male artist across every category, so a category winner can take one too.

Judging is blind. A judge sees an entry code, the video of the finished piece and the photos. They do not see your name, your shop, your Instagram handle, or your check-in videos. Entries are shown to each judge in a different order, so nothing gains from being first. A judge who recognises an artist recuses from that entry, and their answer isn’t counted for it.

Douglas Bermudez, Julia Penza, Matt Cammarano, Maria Alvarez and Orlando Pineda.

Rights to promote UIC entries

By entering the Ultimate Ink Challenge, you give Painless Tattoo permission to use your entry — the photos, the finished-piece video and the tattoo itself — in promotion, both for the contest and for Painless Tattoo more broadly. Website, email, social, ads, print.

The work stays yours. We are asking for permission to show it, not for ownership of it, and we credit you by name and handle wherever we use it. Your check-in videos are only ever used to verify the entry, and are never published.

Conduct

Do not jeopardize the integrity of the contest by attempting to cheat. If we catch you cheating, we will not hesitate to put you on blast in front of your peers.

Do not misrepresent when a tattoo was made, whose work it is, or what it looked like. Entries found to be falsified are disqualified.

Running the contest

Painless Tattoo runs the Ultimate Ink Challenge and makes the calls that keep it fair — disqualifying entries that break these rules, settling anything the rules didn’t anticipate, and adjusting or ending the contest if something outside our control makes it unworkable. We make those calls in the interest of the artists competing and the integrity of the contest.

Cash prizes are income. If you win and you’re in the US, we may need a W-9 before we can pay out, and we’ll sort that with you directly.

Questions

What is the Ultimate Ink Challenge?

A virtual tattoo competition open to working artists anywhere. You tattoo in your own shop, on your own client, and submit photos and video for judging. Think of it as an online convention: the same comparison and competition between artists, without anyone flying across the country.

The 2024 run drew more than 600 entries from all 50 US states and 21 countries.

When can I register?

Registration is open now and stays open through the contest. Register and your private entry link lands in your inbox the day entries open, along with the key dates and exactly what to film. It is free and takes about a minute.

You can enter without registering. But there are pre-tattoo and post-tattoo requirements that decide whether a piece qualifies, and they are far easier to meet when you know about them before you start.

When is the contest live for tattooing?

November 13, 2026 through December 4, 2026, in your own time zone. Only tattoos both started and finished inside that window are eligible.

The window is local to you because it is verified with your phone's lock screen, and a lock screen reads local time.

When do I need to submit my photos and videos?

Uploads close December 6, 2026 at 11:59 PM PT. That is two days after the tattoo window ends, so if you finish a piece on the final night you still have time to get large video files uploaded.

What do I have to submit?

A short check-in video before you start: show your client including their face, point out the area being tattooed, show your phone's lock screen with the date and time clearly visible, and state your first and last name.

A second check-in video when you finish: your client including their face, the finished tattoo, your lock screen showing the date and time, and you stating your first and last name and that you are ready to win the Ultimate Ink Challenge.

Then the work itself: at least one 15-30 second video showing the tattoo from all angles, highlighting the impressive details, and several photos from different angles and distances. Make sure your lighting and camera quality is exceptional.

Can I enter the same piece for multiple categories?

Yes. If the tattoo you completed fits more than one category, you can enter it in each. A black and grey portrait, for example, belongs in both Best Realism (Black & Gray) and Best Portrait.

You only upload it once. It is judged separately in each category you enter.

Can I enter more than one tattoo?

Yes, as long as each tattoo was both started and finished within the contest period and you have the date verification videos for each one.

There is no cap. Enter as many finished tattoos as you like, and as many as you like in any one category. Every entry is judged on its own.

How is the contest judged?

A panel of working tattoo artists scores every entry in each of the 9 judged categories. Judging runs in two rounds: a first pass to shortlist, then full scoring on the shortlist so the strongest work gets real attention.

Judging is blind. A judge sees an entry code, the video of the finished piece and the photos — not your name, your shop, your handle, or your check-in videos. A judge who recognises an artist recuses from that entry.

Round two scores four things from 1 to 10, weighted equally: technique, composition, creativity and difficulty. The highest average in a category wins it.

How do I enter Best of Contest and Fan Favorite?

You don't. Every approved entry is automatically eligible for both.

Best of Contest is awarded twice, once to a female artist and once to a male artist, drawn from the full pool across every category. Fan Favorite is decided by public vote.

Can I edit my photos and videos?

You can replace or reorder your uploads any time before the deadline using the link emailed to you when you submit.

The use of Photoshop or editing tools is strictly prohibited and may disqualify your entry.

What if I miss the registration period?

There is no period to miss. Registration stays open the whole way through, and you can enter right up to the upload deadline as long as your tattoo falls inside the contest window.

The only thing registering late costs you is the head start: the entry link, the dates and the filming requirements come to you instead of you going looking for them. Those requirements start before the first line goes in, so the earlier you have them, the better.
